President Buhari Places Security Agencies on High Alert Ahead of Nigerian Elections

Published

The Nigerian presidency has put the heads of the country’s top security agencies on high alert two days before the presidential and National Assembly elections scheduled for Saturday.

During a meeting of the National Security Council (NSC) in Aso Villa, Abuja, President Muhammadu Buhari charged the security chiefs with the responsibility of ensuring that there are no security breaches before, during, and after the election.

The President’s directive follows concerns expressed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over attacks on its facilities in the South East and other issues.

The National Security Council comprises the National Security Adviser (NSA), Ministers of Defence and Interior, heads of all security agencies including the Army, Navy, Airforce and Police, among others.

Also, Buhari disclosed that he receives briefings from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the general election. The President made this known during a meeting with INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The presidential candidates, including Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Sen. Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), have signed the peace accord amid tight security in Abuja.
