The Labour Party in Lagos State has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of deliberately omitting its logo from ballot papers for the National Assembly elections scheduled for Saturday, February 25.
The party made the discovery during the routine inspection of election materials. LP Chairman in the State, Dayo Ekong, has called on INEC to either correct the mistake or reschedule the National Assembly election.
In a statement issued by Ekong, the LP decried the exclusion of its logo on Senatorial and House of Representatives ballot papers, describing it as a “malicious error”. Ekong called on all stakeholders, lovers of democracy, foreign observers, and the international community to quickly intervene to address the issue.
The party alleged that the exclusion of its candidates was a deliberate, malicious, and intentional act to disenfranchise its supporters from exercising their civic rights.
Further checks on the INEC website revealed that the names of Lagos LP candidates were not uploaded even though the list and court orders for the same were duly submitted to INEC and acknowledged.
The LP expressed its dissatisfaction with the bias displayed by the State INEC REC towards the party and its leaders. The party claimed that the INEC REC has been increasing its attacks on LP leaders, and this exclusion is just the latest in a series of attempts to frustrate the party’s efforts.
The LP is urging INEC to take immediate steps to correct what it describes as an anomaly. The party argues that it is unacceptable that the Lagos electorate can only vote for the LP Presidential Candidate for the elections slated for Saturday, Feb. 25, and not its Senate and House of Representatives Candidates.
