The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched a major operation to prevent vote trading and other forms of financial malfeasance in the lead-up to the presidential and national assembly elections. The operation has yielded some early results, with the interception of N32.4 million in Lagos, allegedly intended for vote buying. The money was seized by operatives of the Lagos Zonal Command of the Commission, and the suspect involved has been taken into custody for further questioning.

Abdulrasheed Bawa, the Chairman of the Commission, has called on all EFCC personnel involved in election monitoring to remain vigilant and not allow corrupt individuals to undermine the integrity of the elections through financial inducement. To this end, tactical teams of operatives are currently deployed in all states of the federation, as well as the Federal Capital Territory. The Commission has also provided telephone hotlines via social media platforms for members of the public to report any incidents of financial malpractice that they may witness.

The EFCC has also urged members of the public to make use of their financial crimes reporting app, Eagle Eye, which is available for download on Google Play and Apple store. Individuals can also contact the Commission through their social media handle, @officialefcc, or by email at info@efcc.gov.ng.

By taking proactive measures against vote buying and other financial malfeasance, the EFCC is sending a strong message that it will not tolerate any attempts to undermine the democratic process in Nigeria. This is a positive step towards ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections, and ultimately, strengthening democracy in the country.
